Domestic Water Issues
The New Mexico Acequia Association requests that the State Engineer continue the policy and procedures of allowing the transfer of domestic well water rights to MDWCAs, encourages acequias and MDWCAs in the same community to collaborative work on water right issues and to ensure the continued viability of acequias and to ensure a safe and secure supply of domestic water, and urges acequias and MDWCAs to work together to retain local ownership and control of water rights so that water can be protected as a community resource in perpetuity.
Acequia Enforcement
The New Mexico Acequia Association requests that the State Legislature update the penalties for interference with an acequia or with violation of the easement of an acequia in such a way that District Attorney’s can prosecute violations on behalf of acequias.
